This is an experiment in our 15+ year old family social network. When we began Freitas.net, sharing your life or ideas publicly on a blog was a novel idea, and thus, the site was something fun and different to do. It was such a new idea, I even write the software myself to make it all work. Since then, there are many, many ways you can share in public or with friends from high school, college, etc, but there are still few ways just to share with your family.
So now, we will experiment with using this site, along with the “FreitasChat” mailing list, as a tool for sharing just amount our family.
The site requires you to be registered and logged in to view or comment on posts. I will manage the user list, and control who can have access. We can still keep “family” loosely defined, but I will make sure to let everyone know when someone new is given access.
Let me know what you think!
Thanks Nate for accommodating my flexible rules also. I try to not post pictures of Luka on social media too frequently and try to restrict my groups. I appreciate that everyone was OK with making Freitas.net private as a test.
I really want to have a place we can all share together, safely, as a family. I am mostly frustrated that we are fractured across different sites, emails, and random sharing here and there.
I can’t imagine if all of my silly childhood photos & videos (xs 100 because of mobile phones) were publicly available.
True… we do need to think about our children’s future selves and what is out there about them in the world. On the other hand, in 2000 years, when someone figures out how to recover the Internet Archive’s Way Back Machine record from the buried vault they discover, “Eliza Loves Life!” will be on it! 🙂
